Dammar gum, also known as damar gum, is a resin obtained from the tree family Dipterocarpaceae in India and East Asia, mainly those of the genera Shorea or Hopea. Most is produced by tapping trees, however, some is collected in its fossilised form on the ground. Dammar resin varies in colour from clear to pale yellow, or grey-brown in its fossilised form.
What makes Dammar so special is its very high refractive index. In Germany, dammar resin is known as Cat’s eye resin.
Our Dammar gum resin (Shorea wiesneri) is sourced in Indonesia and is of exceptional quality.
